because you pick up to 2 traits for your home planet and they give you rank 0 in one skill! i just have to beef those up a bit and add some more flavor!
-find a replacement stat for “Social Standing”, probably something based on radiation or mutation to keep with the theme, in which case i would probably have to change the mechanics behind it too. maybe have it be something like the void ring from L5R.
-rewrite gamma world’s backgrounds and their bonuses to be appropriate and somewhat balanced for the traveller system
-rewrite the career paths from traveller and their bonuses to be appropriate for the gamma world setting
-make the different methods of character creation play nice together because i really really like both of them

i honestly like traveller’s skill bloat simply because you can almost always try to justify using your best physical/mental characteristic as a modifier for the roll. but some of these skills don’t work in gamma world’s post-apocalyptic setting. so here are mongoose traveller’s skills. multiple entries are marked with the appropriate amount of times they show up as an entry

admin, advocate, and steward are right out on account of it’s the lawless wastes. similarly, the players are not going to be doing intergalactic travel, so there goes astrogation. it seems as though i could meld comms and sensors into computers or even just excise them entirely since the only comms systems i can think of them mostly encountering would be on the scale of walkie-talkies. i could probably think of new languages if i wanted to make potentially hazardous communication barriers between the players and, say, ancient salvaged tech they might find, but i could just as easily take it out.
i’m a little on the fence regarding some of the more space-oriented skills, like pilot, vacc suit, and zero-g, because while i don’t want to discount space (i.e. near orbit, space stations, the moon, etc) as a possible setting (because space owns), it doesn’t dominate the setting in quite the way that traveller does and it might potentially handicap most of my players if they expect that they’ll never go into space. then again if a bunch of mutated freaks somehow got launched into orbit then they WOULD be handicapped in space because they would have no way of knowing what to expect. again, i could probably mush a lot of these together.
i like all the sciences because they mostly still apply. i could probably just switch “space sciences” out for like “nuclear sciences” or even “shamanism” i dunno. battle dress still works as battle dress because if you think for even a second that the party WON’T encounter the rusted hulk of a pre-calamity mech out in the wastes then you don’t know me at all. remote operations is “the skill of using telepresence to remotely control drones, missiles, robots and other devices” which sounds like i should pretty much replace that shit with psionics and/or remove it entirely yet again.
“survival” now becomes a pretty crucial concept. it almost seems like now that there is a sudden void of space-related specialized skills (EHEHEH) i should fill it with survival specializations. scrounging/salvage, water filtration, tracking, waste lore, etc.
